We have landed; we have arrived at the last letter of the alphabet! I had some different ideas for the letter Z, but while I was running this morning, I suddenly thought about this nursery rhyme.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
If you want to take a trip,
Climb aboard my rocket ship.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
Blast off!

It’s funny as I was not living in my home country when I gave birth, so the songs and nursery rhymes we taught our daughter are British ones. I remember the first few times I went to baby sensory classes and all the moms knew the words to the songs. That was some very unconvertible shit I can tell you, I have silently wished myself away from those situations. Yes I even lip-synced pretending to know the words to these songs.

This stupid nursery song embodied the inconvertible part of becoming a mother for me. When we do new things in life, it’s often very inconvertible, you feel naked and exposed. But then we start to do them more and it becomes more natural, yes I became pretty good at blasting off my child at the end of the song.

Parenting is kind of like this song, I am taking my child aboard my ship. I am teaching her stuff about life, I show her life. I tell her she can reach the moon, and my rocket ship will take her there. I zoom her into inconvertible situations like new schools, new homes, new friends, new situations. I hold her tight and then I let her go—5, 4, 3 ,2 ,1… blast off! Good luck child, I hope I held you tight enough as a child so you can blast into adulthood.

I have no idea if I am blasting her off the right way, but I am pretty sure I am doing many things wrong as a mother. The bills of adulthood therapy will tell us the truth. I do know that I had a better chance of becoming the rocket I wanted to be living in another country when I became a mother. No, I do not have a village to help me raise my daughter, but I have the chance to build my own rocket ship exactly the way I want.

5, 4, 3, 2 ,1 blast off to my next Zoom meeting!
